Posted by anorak48 on 13 July 2014 - 09:52:10

there are too many variations of an airlines name British Airways has 31 Virgin Atlantic has 5 Delta Airlines has 9 Qantas has 21 dare say there are more I have not looked at. could they all be just merged under the just one name say just the airlines name. as it would make it easier when searching for one aircraft.

Hi Gary,

This is a limitation of the data source I've been using - there are many inconsistencies in it, such as the naming of airlines. This causes the problem you have noticed.

The good news though, is I have just updated the database using this source for the last time. From now on all database updates will be performed manually, which means we can start using more consistent names for airlines, and can merge the multiple records into one to make the fleet listings more reliable.

This is going to be quite a laborious task, but please stick with us, and these records will become more consistent and reliable over the next few months.

Hi Nighthawk As I'm adding in many old sightings from the 80s and 90s, I'm seeing a lot of variations on airline names - eg AOM, AOM-French Airlines, AOM-Air Outre Mer, Fll-AOM-Air Outre Mer.

Would it help to report these in the forum so they can be updated? Or are you working your way through anyway?

Cheers Dougie

Hi Dougie,

I am working through the database on this but it is a huge set of data. Sometimes it is a combined name consisting of airline and lessor and so on.

So if you see anything, please report that here in the forum and I´ll take care of it.

Will have a look into the AOM case soon.

AOM has now been streamlined and merged together.

If you (or anyone else) sees more of this in the database, please let us know and we´ll take care of it.

Cheers,

Dennis

There all also too many variations of model numbers. Here is an example: N583AS - 737-890(W); N552AS - 737-890(WL). Just looking at the Alaska Airlines fleet shows the (W) vs (WL) to be randomized. This affects the Top Aircraft Models on the My Sightings page. About 35% are (WL). If it were an MS Word document one could simply hit FIND and REPLACE should the Administrator rule on a convention. For my own sightings I've decided to manually get rid of the "L". I predict it will change my Top Aircraft Models-most likely for Alaska and SWA. It looks quite easy. I will just look at the fleet list and click on the ones I've seen. Jonathan
