Uploading Sightings from Excel

Hi, very pleased to find this site. I've got many years worth of sightings logged, first in books, then about 12 years ago got some logging software and transferred all my sightings to that. However a few years ago that company stopped supporting the desktop programme (ie update uploads) so I've been trying to find a new way to record my sightings.

I've started with another web based logging site, and I've been copying my sightings in one by one but it is really low, especially with aircraft that have changed hands. I've logged around 2,500 which has got me to January 2004 and there are still thousands to go.

What I like at first glance about this site you have is that I can record what the aircraft was when I saw it.

So my question - to save me hundreds of hours of retyping, is it possible to do a mass upload of my sightings from an excel sheet?

Also I saw on another question in the forum, you said that the database contains most aircraft types; which Soviet types are included? I've found IL86, An74, Tu154, but I've searched for a few Yak40s, Antonov 12s and Antonov 2s and not found them.

Lastly any plans to be able to mark an aircraft as flown, and add flight details?

Thanks, Dougie

Hi Dougie,

I'm glad you found us, and like the site. Be sure to tell everyone you know about us too :)

You can find a list of all supported aircraft types here, although as you have found, support for Russian aircraft is a bit patchy. Only aircraft that have been sighted recently are listed. You can however still record sightings even if they are not in the DB, by using the Add Multiple Sightings page.

Right now there is no plan to add a "mark as flown" function, I want to concentrate on improving the reliability of the database, especially fleet listings, then add the ability to upload photos. After that I may look at adding the ability to mark aircraft flown.

In terms of importing logs, if you email them to me at webmaster@taxiwayalpha.com I will take a look at importing them for you.
