Hello Dave7514,

If the aircraft is parked at your house, in a museum, or on a post in a traffic circle you would use OFF. For sighting you see from your house use OTT.

What about OTH (Over the House)?

Hi Dave,

I use OTT for over the top sightings and XMU for museums, I don't do sbs logging so don't have an abbreviation.

I guess what works for you best is the answer! As with most plane spotting we all have different 'rules' that we work with.

For me OFF airport is any plane that I have got the reg for that has recently departed or is on it way descending into its arrival airport whilst not actually at the airport (I live in Kent so planes to/from LHR/LGW/LCY etc) I use OTT for any aircraft that I get the reg for that are already at cruising level.

For me to count a aircraft I either have to get it using bins or for the high level flights my camera and lens (cannon 7d with 500mm lens) allow you to confirm the reg when the conditions are good, just wish the German and USA aircraft carried under wing regs!) Not so much now but in the past seen a number of examples when the flight tracking has been incorrect for the actual aircraft (a Ryanair and Transaero example spring to mind)

As I said at first the most important thing is to use something that works for you and enjoy what your doing!
