Site very slow lately

Ever since the server change, the response times for the site have been extremely slow. I have had many timeouts when entering data the last few days, before the change I never had a timeout. Has anyone else noticed a drastic slowdown, or can any of the admins suggest anything I can do? It's happened on multiple networs (ie: home LAN, home wifi, work LAN, and public wifi) so I can't point to just one system being slow.

Thanks for your help, keep up the great work though, I love this site!

John

Site dropping me off. Very difficult to get back on. Had to close out, open a new tab and wait. and wait. and wait.... seriously.

Apologies for this. I moved to a new server that should be faster.. but instead we seem to be getting some DNS issues. I'm not quite sure what's going on, but hopefully It'll be resolved soon.

Apologies again, and hopefully it will be solved soon.

Still very slow and server keeps crashing. As a Premium Member I was expecting better service, not worse. Makes me wonder why i upgraded in the first place

Hello Everyone,

Apologies once again for the poor site performance recently.

The previous site was hosted on a rather aging web server, that was constantly complaining about lack of memory. It was decided to move to cloud based hosting, which would allow us to better scale in future as the site grows. I did numerous tests on the server before committing, and performance was looking great - outperforming the previous server.

Unfortunately, as soon as traffic was switched over to the new server, performance plummeted. I had assumed at first it was a DNS issue - some users were still being routed via the old server while it propagated, but after a few days it hasn't got any better.

I've been speaking to the hosts today to see if everything was configured correctly, and they've confirmed that it is indeed all correct, so I'm now at a loss to explain why the performance is so poor.

We've got numerous diagnostic tools running, and finally I have a clear few days to look into it further, so I'm hoping we can nail the issue as soon as possible.

If not... tomorrow we're going back to the old server!

Apologies once again, I'm on the case, and all will be resolved one way or another by tomorrow, even if we have to change servers again!

Hello Gavin, the other night I posted to the forum on the corrections and additions thread. Now it see it has not appeared or rather may have disappeared altogether. Maybe I tapped the wrong key, but I wonder if it is related to the site performance issues. Jonathan

Update: We're back!

Phew, what a pain that was! I managed to track it down to a database issue, and eventually accidentally discovered that all the table indexes had been completely destroyed in the move. Most tables were showing 90% fragmentation!

Rebuilt all the indexes, and load times dropped from 20 seconds to 3 seconds! Phew!

If anyone continues to experience any issues, please post here and I'll look in to it, but that seems to be performance back to normal. The site has never been particularly fast, so the next exercise is to further optimise it and get it even lower, but it's back to where it was, so that's a start!
